Endorsed Candidate: Kenneth J. Ashman

Kenneth J. Ashman is a current DPS 109 School Board member and a Riverwoods resident for the last 18 years, having raised four children in the district.  One of his kids has special needs, so he has experienced the full panoply of educational services in the District, adding a deeper understanding of the District’s needs and resources.

“It is very hard to imagine a more important responsibility than to ensure the education of our children,” Ashman said. “I take great pride in the DPS 109 community, and it is an honor for me to serve as one of the community’s representatives on the school board.”

Ashman is chair of the Board’s policy committee.

An attorney concentrating in business litigation and intellectual property, he held an administrative law judge position as a Due Process Hearing Officer with the Illinois State Board of Education, where he adjudicated disputes between parents and school districts concerning special education issues. Besides his expertise in special education law, he has a long-standing interest in education, having earned his undergraduate degree in secondary education. 

Ashman is annually ranked as one of “Chicago’s Top-Rated Lawyers,” and annually named a “Super Lawyer” in business litigation, a designation that puts him in the top 5 percent of Illinois lawyers. He is rated “AV Preeminent” by Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory, its highest rating for both legal ability and ethics, and has earned a perfect 10.0 rating from Avvo.”

Beyond his legal career, Ashman is cofounder of a free pediatric oncology camp, Kids Are Kids Chicago, where he served as its president.
