Endorsed candidate: Ellen London

Ellen London is a 15-year resident of Deerfield. She is proud to have served on the DPS 109 Board for almost eight years and is honored to have been chosen by her colleagues to serve as the Board president for four years.

In addition to the presidency, London currently chairs the EDC, the Board committee responsible for setting the superintendent's goals and administrative salaries, and previously chaired the Facilities Development Committee. For the past six years, she has represented DPS 109 as a governing board member of the Northern Suburban Special Education District. London also serves as an alternate member of the board of control of the Low Incidence Cooperative Agreement, serving hearing-impaired students in 44 suburban school districts.

London attended her first Board meeting in 1995 as her eldest son was completing kindergarten. “There was a concern about first grade class size at South Park and Walden for the following year. The administration was able to create smaller classes at South Park but was unable to do so at Walden,” she recalls. “It did, however, provide an aide to each first grade classroom. I was intrigued by the presentations, deliberations, and factors that were part of the decision process by the Board members and administration.”

“Through my volunteer efforts in my sons’ classrooms, in the PTO, and on District and county committees, I have become passionate about education.

“Professionally, I have a background in local government law. Through my volunteer efforts in my sons’ classrooms, in the PTO, and on District and county committees, I have become passionate about education,” London continues. “It is a pleasure to serve in a community that sends us well prepared, inquisitive students and has provided the District with the resources necessary to continually improve and challenge our students.”

London rose through the ranks, volunteering for many positions and committees on the PTOs and in the District. She also has trained to be a Court Appointed Special Advocate helping children placed in the foster care system. As a school board member, London has attended numerous conferences, lectures, and meetings to continually improve her performance and effectiveness. These efforts have qualified her for Master Board Member status with the Illinois Association of School Boards.

A graduate of University of Michigan, London also received a J.D. from Duke University. Ellen and her husband, Jeff, have two sons. Adam is a sophomore at the University of Michigan, and Josh is a junior at Deerfield High School. In her spare time, she enjoys needlepoint and maj jongg and is trying to break her addiction to Japanese puzzle games.
